Did I just see that? No, it was a deepfake

What happens when you mashup the Full House theme with Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman)? You get a deepfake – a video that utilizes a technique for human image synthesis based on artificial intelligence. It is used to combine and superimpose existing images and videos onto source images or videos using a machine learning technique known as generative adversarial network.

While fairly amusing in this context, this “deepfake” opens the door to other questions – could you be fooled into believing something someone said in a video when it isn’t true or isn’t really them?

The technique is fairly inexpensive now and raises questions if deepfaking could be used nefariously in say, an election. Let’s hope not.
